UBON RATCHATHANI, THAILAND – In a significant operation led by Governor SUPHASIT KORCHAROENYOS, Ubon Ratchathani province witnessed a major crackdown on a popular establishment for allegedly selling kratom juice, cannabis, and untaxed cigarettes to the youth. The raid, executed by a special task force, resulted in the seizure of substantial quantities of kratom and cannabis, alongside other illicit items, marking a bold statement against unlicensed drug sales in the heart of Ubon Ratchathani.
The operation targeted the “Yan Yang Yai” shop, located at 470/764 Eua Arthorn Phase 2, Ban Huai Khum, which was reportedly promoting kratom juice at discounted rates with home delivery services. The owner, JAKKAPAN PANTHAPETCH, 20, was apprehended with goods valued at approximately 520,000 THB, including 215 bottles of kratom juice, 26 bags of kratom leaves, and significant amounts of cough syrup, a press for cannabis, and 114 kg of compressed cannabis.
This incident brings to light the complex landscape of cannabis and kratom in Thailand, where recent moves towards legalization and regulation have sparked debate and uncertainty. While the government aims to control and benefit from the cannabis industry, challenges remain in ensuring compliance and preventing misuse, especially among the youth.
The raid not only underscores the need for clear guidelines and enforcement but also raises questions about the balance between crackdowns and fostering a regulated, responsible cannabis market. As Thailand continues to navigate these waters, the focus remains on creating a framework that protects young people while allowing for the growth of a legal cannabis industry.
