BANGKOK, THAILAND – Thailand is taking a groundbreaking step in the battle against drug addiction through the pioneering use of cannabidiol (CBD)-infused marijuana oil. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) has unveiled Karun Osoth, a therapeutic concoction combining coconut oil and CBD, designed to curb drug cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia and muscle pains.

DR. THEWAN THANIRAT, DTAM’s deputy director-general, announced the initiative, which has already been deployed in a pilot project across three Thai hospitals. This revolutionary treatment offers a non-psychoactive solution, leveraging CBD’s properties to provide relief without intoxication.

Bangkok Thai Traditional Medicine Hospital, Udon Thani Thai Traditional Medicine Hospital, and Phatthalung Thai Traditional Medicine Hospital are at the forefront of this initiative, collectively treating over 550 patients. This approach not only showcases the potential of herbal remedies in addiction treatment but also signals a significant shift in public health strategy towards embracing the medicinal value of cannabis.

Furthermore, this movement aligns with the broader acceptance of cannabis in Thai society, following its reclassification as a controlled herbal substance. The initiative is a part of a comprehensive effort to integrate traditional Thai medicine with modern healthcare practices, offering a holistic approach to addiction recovery.

This innovative strategy is complemented by the anticipated CISW MedCann Festival International 2024, spotlighting the medical cannabis sector’s growth and potential. As Thailand continues to explore the therapeutic benefits of cannabis, it sets a precedent for integrating traditional remedies with contemporary medicine, offering new hope for individuals struggling with addiction.
