NAKHON PHANOM, THAILAND – In a recent escalation of the fight against illegal cannabis trafficking, a group of over 30 smugglers violently attacked two Thai Navy officers from the Mekong Riverine Unit (NRU) during a patrol in Ban Phaeng district. The attack occurred as the officers attempted to intercept a smuggling operation along the Mekong River.

The officers, who belong to the NRU’s Nakhon Phanom division, were patrolling the area near Ban Don Phaeng when they encountered the smugglers. The suspects, known locally as the Ban Don Phaeng twins gang, have a history of involvement in cross-border illegal activities. The gang members, armed and aggressive, surrounded the officers and assaulted them. Fortunately, the officers managed to escape and subsequently reported the incident to the Ban Phaeng police.

The gang, which has capitalized on the recent legalization of cannabis in Thailand, smuggles cannabis flowers from neighboring countries where cultivation is extensive. They exploit legal loopholes, making enforcement challenging for local authorities. Despite the legalization, the transportation of cannabis into Thailand remains strictly regulated under customs laws.

The attackers are known to have connections with influential local figures and politicians who facilitate their smuggling operations. This network has become increasingly emboldened, using threats and violence to protect their interests. In response, the NRU, under the command of Rear Admiral Narin Khawcharoen, has vowed to intensify its crackdown on these illegal operations.

Rear Admiral Narin stated, “We will not tolerate such blatant disregard for the law. Our officers showed commendable restraint, avoiding the use of firearms despite being heavily armed. We are escalating our efforts to dismantle this criminal network and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The incident underscores the complexities and dangers faced by law enforcement in regulating cannabis amidst its evolving legal status. The NRU plans to collaborate with various security agencies to ensure thorough enforcement and prevent further incidents.

In light of the attack, the NRU is reinforcing its patrols along the Mekong River and enhancing intelligence operations to track and intercept smuggling activities. Authorities are also seeking legal avenues to strengthen the existing regulatory framework, ensuring that all cannabis-related activities are properly monitored and controlled.

As Thailand continues to navigate its cannabis policy, the government and law enforcement agencies are reminded of the critical need for stringent regulations and vigilant enforcement to prevent the exploitation of legal ambiguities by criminal elements.
