A team of researchers from Khon Kaen University, including prominent figures such as Kachornsak Siwatee, Pattapong Ketsomboon, and others, in collaboration with the public health personnel of Don Chan Hospital in Kalasin Province, conducted a study supported by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. Their research found that a cannabis formula known as “Metta Osatha” is effective in treating pain resulting from neuropathy in diabetic patients.

The study highlighted that over 5.4 million Thais suffer from diabetes, and a significant number of them experience complications like foot ulcers, which can lead to amputations. The Department of Thai Traditional Medicine sponsored the research at Khon Kaen University to explore the potential of the external application of the Metta Osatha cannabis formula to treat neuropathic pain from diabetes. The results were promising, showing a significant reduction in pain and an improvement in the quality of life for patients.

This cannabis formula, derived from the female cannabis flower of the “Hang Krarok” strain, has a composition of THC:CBN:CBD equivalent to 3.20:0.65:0.32 milligrams per drop. The research holds potential for further development and broader application to reduce the incidence of amputations and enhance the quality of life for diabetic patients. Moreover, it emphasizes the capability of Thailand in self-reliance in medical treatments.
