Phuket Town is the main hub for locals.  It is the home of the provincial government and most government offices are located in the city.

Back when Thailand was still Siam, Phuket Town was a thriving center of international trade. The old city walls and forts testify to its past as a Portuguese colony. These days, the town is a more laid-back affair, but no less charming for it.
