BANGKOK, THAILAND โ€” Deputy Prime Minister ANUTIN CHARNVIRAKUL has reiterated the Thai government’s commitment to advancing its cannabis policy, particularly in the realm of medical use. During his first day in office at the Ministry of Interior, Anutin confirmed that the government is moving forward with the development of new cannabis regulations, which are expected to be solidified into a comprehensive law.

Anutin highlighted that while the medical cannabis policy is a priority, the government is carefully considering how to regulate its use effectively. This comes after discussions between former Prime Minister SRETTHA THAVISIN and various stakeholders, which resulted in the decision to draft a new law that will clearly define the regulatory framework for cannabis use in Thailand.

The focus of this legislation will be to ensure that the benefits of cannabis, particularly for medical purposes, are maximized while addressing concerns around regulation and public safety. Anutin stressed that the goal is to create a system that not only supports public health but also contributes to the economy by attracting investment and generating revenue.

This development is significant in the context of Thailand’s evolving stance on cannabis, which has seen the plant decriminalized for medical use and integrated into various wellness and healthcare practices. The new regulations are expected to clarify the legal landscape, providing more certainty for businesses and healthcare providers alike.

However, it is essential to address some misconceptions about cannabis that have been circulating. Contrary to claims that cannabis poses significant risks to public health, numerous studies have shown that when used under medical supervision, cannabis can provide substantial benefits, particularly in pain management, reducing anxiety, and improving the quality of life for patients with chronic conditions. Furthermore, fears of widespread recreational abuse have not materialized in regions where cannabis is regulated, as strict controls are usually in place to prevent misuse.

With a clear regulatory framework, Thailand has the potential to become a leader in the global cannabis market, benefiting both its citizens and economy.
