  • Driving The News: Proposals to ban cannabis sales within 300 meters of schools gain momentum, reflecting a proactive approach to minimize potential harm to students.

BANGKOK, THAILAND – In a significant move to address the growing concerns around the accessibility of cannabis to the youth, Bangkok’s city council has proposed stringent measures to regulate cannabis sales around educational institutions. The proposal, spearheaded by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) member Wiput Sriwarom, aims to ban the sale of cannabis within a 300-meter radius of schools, following a comprehensive study that revealed over half of the cannabis outlets in Bangkok are located near vulnerable areas, including schools.

The study, conducted by a special committee on the impact of cannabis and hemp near sensitive locations, found that children and teenagers aged 12 to 18 are increasingly exposed to cannabis, leading to health issues and hospital treatments for some. The committee’s findings have sparked a city-wide initiative to reassess the approach towards cannabis regulation, especially in proximity to educational environments.

Wiput Sriwarom emphasized the need for a balanced perspective on cannabis, acknowledging its medical benefits while highlighting the risks associated with unregulated recreational use. The proposed measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure that cannabis, particularly in its recreational form, does not adversely affect the youth’s development and well-being.

The BMA’s initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for targeted legislation that addresses the specific challenges posed by cannabis legalization. The proposals include a comprehensive evaluation of the benefits and drawbacks of current cannabis policies, with a strong emphasis on medical use and strict regulation of recreational consumption.

As Thailand continues to explore the potential of cannabis for medical tourism and economic development, the focus remains on creating a regulatory framework that prioritizes public health, especially among the younger population. The proposed ban around schools is a testament to Thailand’s commitment to responsible cannabis use and the protection of its youth from potential harm.
