Leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, and newly appointed minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, discussed his party’s plans to implement a marijuana policy but cautioned that they were going to take a conservative path towards liberalization.
The Bhumjaithai Party’s flagship ganja seri,or cannabis liberalization policy, will roll out in a gradual manner. Anutin seemed to be sensitive to the fact that many fear that medical marijuana legalization was a pathway to quick recreational legalization, and to concerns among some that politics may serve to enrich some over others.
While Anutin is pushing for people to be able to grow their own marijuana plants, he stresses that he does not support commercial trading in marijuana plants by anyone that is not licensed to grow medical-quality plants.
At the moment, all marijuana being grown must be sold to the government for medicinal purposes.
But Anutin wants to see farmers trained and guided in how to grow marijuana in a responsible manner. He stresses the importance of growing medical-quality marijuana without contaminants.
The Bhumjaithai Party’s plans for marijuana liberalization seem to be influenced by the strong critics who are concerned that these policies are simply a gateway to recreational marijuana.
Anutin said that he plans on rolling out his party’s plans over a one or two year period with pilot programs to test the effectiveness and systems as they are being introduced.
