The Cannabis and Hemp Industry Association recently met with Minister Chalnan Srikaew to seek clarity regarding the status of cannabis and hemp as controlled substances. This move is driven by the industry’s desire to propel business forward, especially considering that individual companies have invested between 200-300 million baht, amounting to billions in total. The association urges for a comprehensive review before implementing any controlling laws and also contemplates the separation of ‘hemp’ from ‘cannabis’ due to their distinct uses.

On October 11th, Minister Chalnan Srikaew addressed the concerns raised during a meeting with the association on October 9th. The industry representatives highlighted the challenges faced due to the ambiguity surrounding the legal status of cannabis and hemp. They emphasized the need for clear regulations to facilitate business operations.

Minister Chalnan acknowledged the concerns and assured that the government is actively working on clarifying the legal status of these plants. He mentioned the potential separation of hemp from cannabis, noting the distinct commercial uses of hemp fibers in the industry, while cannabis is primarily used for health and medical purposes.

The minister also touched upon the current legal framework, stating that businesses can proceed under existing laws, especially if they are producing health products. However, the clarity regarding the status of products containing THC and CBD is essential for the industry’s growth.
