The Thai Cannabis Future Network has expressed concerns over the approach of Dr. Chonlanan Srikaew, the Minister of Public Health, towards the use of cannabis for medical and health purposes. The network believes that while Dr. Chonlanan supports the medical use of cannabis, his stance could potentially deprive the public of their rights to access the plant.
Mr. Prasitchai Nunuan, Secretary-General of the Thai Cannabis Future Network, emphasized that local doctors and practitioners of Thai traditional medicine have utilized cannabis for centuries, not just the modern medical professionals. He pointed out that the core knowledge of cannabis use lies with these local experts and the general public who have been using cannabis for therapeutic purposes.
However, the current direction seems to be shifting the decision-making power to modern medical professionals, many of whom are not in favor of cannabis. This move is seen by the network as sidelining local knowledge and expertise in favor of centralized decision-making, a form of authoritarianism.
Mr. Prasitchai further stated that the real conflict in the upcoming discussions about cannabis will revolve around its definition in terms of medical and health usage. He urged Dr. Chonlanan to respect local treatment systems and to consider the traditional practices that view smoking as a form of treatment.
The Secretary-General also highlighted the potential hypocrisy in opposing cannabis smoking while allowing the consumption of cigarettes, which are known to cause significant health issues. He stressed the importance of not distorting the perception of smoking and urged for a more balanced view.
Given the current situation, the Thai Cannabis Future Network is considering organizing a rally to voice their concerns. They believe that the fight is not just about cannabis but about recognizing and integrating local knowledge into the country’s regulations. The network has also announced a gathering on September 23 in Krabi to discuss the Cannabis Act and its implications for the future of cannabis in Thailand.
