  • The Big Picture: Thailand is tightening its control over cannabis and hemp extracts, with stricter licensing requirements designed to prevent illegal use and protect public health.
  • What To Watch: How these new regulations will impact the local cannabis industry and the enforcement of cannabis extract usage for medical and research purposes.

BANGKOK, THAILAND โ€“ The Thai Ministry of Public Health has introduced new regulations requiring licenses for the production, import, export, sale, and possession of cannabis and hemp extracts, following a decision by the Cabinet on October 9, 2024. These new rules are designed to regulate the use of cannabis extracts more strictly, particularly for medical, commercial, and industrial purposes.

The regulations will require individuals or organizations to obtain a license valid for three years. Those involved in the extraction of cannabis for any purpose must ensure compliance with these rules, or they could face penalties. The governmentโ€™s goal is to prevent the misuse of cannabis extracts while allowing their legal use for health, research, and economic benefits.

According to the new law, only cannabis extracts containing less than 0.2% THC, derived from locally grown cannabis, will not be classified as narcotics. Any individual or organization wishing to work with cannabis extracts above this threshold will need to apply for a license and adhere to stringent safety and reporting requirements.
