CHAIYAPHUM, THAILAND – On June 21, a severe fire engulfed a large cannabis cultivation warehouse in Chaiyaphum, causing significant damage and widespread panic among local residents. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, destroyed the entire facility, which housed both cultivated cannabis plants and stored cannabis products.
The incident occurred at a commercial cannabis farm located in Soi behind a convenience store on Chaiyaphum-Tad Tone Road, Moo 17, Ban Choraka, Naphai Subdistrict, Mueang District. The warehouse, measuring approximately 40×60 meters, was equipped with multiple air conditioners running 24/7 to maintain the optimal growing conditions for the cannabis plants.
Local residents were jolted awake by the sound of explosions and saw large plumes of smoke rising from the warehouse. Witnesses reported seeing several workers, who spoke a foreign language, fleeing the scene in a pickup truck as the fire intensified.
Firefighters from the Naphai Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) and volunteers from Sawang Kunnatum Foundation responded swiftly with two fire trucks. They worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential areas, managing to control the blaze within 30 minutes.
Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have started due to an electrical short circuit, possibly caused by the extensive use of air conditioning units within the warehouse. The facility was also insulated with foam, which may have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Authorities plan to conduct a thorough investigation to confirm the exact cause of the fire and assess the safety measures in place at the cannabis cultivation site. This incident underscores the need for stringent safety protocols in facilities that handle large amounts of electrical equipment and combustible materials.
